Intermediate Polar (2002)
This picture shows a magnetic cataclysmic variable called an intermediate polar. The
white dwarf and its magnetic field are spinning around very quickly where the centre
of the accretion disc would be, removing its central regions. In its place is a
'curtain' of gas, accreting from the inner edge of the disc and flowing onto the
magnetic poles of the white dwarf.
