Hubble Sequence (2002)
I made this picture in Photoshop, as a commission for Sky &
Telescope. It shows the famous Hubble diagram, which astronomer Edwin Hubble
devised to show how he thought galaxies evolved from spherical to elliptical, before
splitting into two tracks: spiral (right tine) and barred spiral. In fact, we now
know that galaxies do not follow this pattern of evolution.
