The Solar Crown (2001)
This picture shows an impression of the Sun's outermost atmosphere, the corona. The
corona is very hot, millions of degrees compared to thousands of degrees for the
solar surface. But it is very tenuous and can only be seen when the Sun's bright disc
is hidden, as during a solar eclipse. Note the streamers in the atmosphere, caused by
gas flowing along magnetic field lines.
