This is my impression of the Mars Pathfinder rover, called Sojourner, which touched down safely on the Red Planet on American Independence Day in 1997. The craft itself actually landed in a lava flood plain — chosen because it was flat and easier to achieve a nice touch-down there. This image depicts the Martian landscape as anything but flat — but that's what artistic license is for.
