Sun Eater (2002)

This was a commission for the November 2002 Scientific American. They wanted me to illustrate what would happen if a white dwarf, tiny and dense, collided with our Sun. As the white dwarf approaches, its tidal pull on the Sun stretches the latter into an egg-like shape. I have exaggerated the stretching here very slightly for artistic purposes.
