Red / Blue (2004)

Here are two versions of the same image, in red and blue. They show an X-ray binary star seen from a nearby, hypothetical asteroid field. In the blue one, a blue supergiant is losing mass to a black hole (top). In the red one, it is a red dwarf which is donating its atmosphere. These systems are known, respectively, as high-mass and low-mass X-ray binaries. See also Low-Mass X-ray Binary.
