Astronomers led by a team from Warwick University have found a binary star which they believe is
heading towards a supernova. Light variations from the system (called HD265435) indicate that the
larger star is distorted into a teardrop shape by its dense, white dwarf companion. Eventually, as
more and more material is pulled from the giant star towards the white dwarf, the latter will reach
critical mass and will explode as a type 1A supernova.
