Conceptual depiction of the NIGHT Project - a high-resolution near-infrared spectrograph dedicated to
surveying escaping exoplanet atmospheres, operated via an international consortium of institutions.
NIGHT will look at many planets with escaping atmospheres (one after the other) through the
‘transit’ method, when the planet is in front of its star. Working on a relatively small
(2-metre) telescope, the instrument aims to explain the 'Neptunian desert' - an apparent dearth of
Neptune-sized planets at short orbital periods.
