Researchers at the University of Notre Dame have identified the first eclipsing magnetic propeller in
a cataclysmic variable star system, according to research forthcoming in the Astrophysical Journal.
The system J0240 comprises a highly magnetic white dwarf losing material to a red dwarf companion
star. The gas pulled from the red dwarf flows towards the white dwarf in a series of clumps or
clouds; which then get deflected away from the system by the rapidly spinning magnetic field of the
white dwarf. Systems such as these are also known as intermediate polars or DQ Her stars.
